Among the approaches I may use with you:
Support and encouragement:
Just what it sounds like. In order for people to change, they need to feel safe. I am interactive while also giving you space to figure things out yourself.
Insight and Understanding:
It’s simple–understanding can set us free. Without it, we are flying blind. Understanding our motives and their origins can be a powerful tool for getting on top of our problems rather than being a victim of them.
Advice and Advocacy:
I tell people what I think. I don’t sit there and answer every question with a question. And if you need help with other systems or institutions, I’m happy to roll up my sleeves and get involved as your advocate.
Participant observation:
Occasionally, a client needs me to come to them, rather than vice-versa. For example, some people with phobias can desensitize their fear with help from a therapist on site.
